"One Mission One Sisterhood Empowering Communities Through Committed Service"

TAC Programs

Delta's Five-Point Program Thrust:

  • Actualizes the Delta Oath by actively participating in the discussion of issues that affect the welfare of the country.
  • Categorizes social action issues and policies that impact the African American Community.
  • Mobilizes the critical mass needed to develop strategies for the enactment of laws for the deprived and unfortunate.
  • Emphasizes the importance of legislation that secures human and civil rights for all citizens.
  • Realizes and appreciates the tremendous influence that is held by Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.

Economic Development

Delta Black Dollar Days
In an effort to support black businesses, we participated in the first ever Delta Black Dollar Days where we sold pyramids for $1 at area black-owned businesses (similar to the shamrocks for the March of Dimes). The money collected was donated to The Relay for Life Cancer Walk. We continue to support Black businesses throughout the year in addition to acknowledging their achievements during our annual May Week celebration.

Economic Township Award
In 2004 we gave out our first Economic Township Award (called the D.E.L.T.A. Award) which honored a black owned business that focuses its services on one or more of the points in our thrust. The award given out stood for Delta’s Economic Lifetime Township Award in recognition for their service to the community. The award went to Parks and Crump at the community forum held at the Smith Williams Center. Our recipient in 2005 was Hinson Realty, Inc.

Educational Development

The Betty Shabazz Delta Academy began in 1997 for the Tallahassee Alumnae Chapter. This national initiative focuses on at-risk teenage girls from 11-14 years of age. The program offers tutoring, mentoring and career guidance to girls who are economically disadvantaged. The program places a special emphasis on careers in math, science and technology.

The Delta Teen Challenge Program began in October 1991 for the Tallahassee Alumnae Chapter. This national initiative was designed to challenge and motivate adolescents and teenage girls to achieve their maximum potential academically, socially, morally, and personally. Focus areas include Personal Development, Social Graces, Health and Sex Education, Career Development, and Cultural Enhancement. The young ladies participate in service projects to give them a civic orientation. They also have fund-raisers for their annual trip. Through an initiative from the current National President the name has been changed to Delta GEMS.

Physical and Mental Health

Healthy Lifestyles Initiative

The goal of this program is to combat the high incidence of obesity among women. TAC Sorors participate in exercise activities twice a month and gain knowledge on healthy lifestyle habits.

Sickle Cell Run

Annually, TAC Sorors participate with other organizations and citizens of Tallahassee to raise money for the Sickle Cell Foundation. Sorors help with registration and assist with other duties to make the run a success. We have participated in this activity for over 20 years.

Breast Cancer Awareness

In 2003 the Tallahassee Alumnae Chapter co-sponsored a Breast Cancer Awareness Fashion Show and served as models in conjunction with the Area Agency of Aging Wellness Program, Florida Department of Elder Affairs, Kappa Epsilon Pharmacy Fraternity, Inc. FAMU College of Pharmacy, Tallahassee Senior Center, Acoustic Advantage, and Smokey Bones BBQ.

In 2004 TAC participated with a Mardi Gras social in conjunction with the Senior Citizens Center. TAC along with Kappa Epsilon and Beta Alpha served as hostesses.

Third Thursday Health Focus
Once a month, TAC hosts an activity promoting fitness by having a cardiovascular workout and discussing an important health issue in an open-floor discussion.  Locations for the activities include community centers and local universities.

Political Awareness and Involvement

Delta Days at the Capitol
Tallahassee Alumnae, Beta Alpha, Kappa Epsilon, and Gadsden County Florida Alumnae Chapters hosted the First Florida Statewide Delta Days at the Capitol (DDAC) in March 1995. It has since become an annual event.

This event gives Sorors throughout the state an opportunity to interact with state legislators in Tallahassee while broadening the scope of Delta's "Five Point Program Thrust."

Political Forums

TAC held a political questions and answer forum with the League of Women Voters and Tallahassee Women’s Lawyers at the Radisson Hotel prior to the 2002 local elections.

In July 2004 TAC held a Voter Empowerment forum in conjunction with Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity and Gadsden County FL Alumnae Chapter of DST in Quincy, FL. The purpose was to educate citizens on the voting irregularities from the previous election.

TAC also co-sponsored a Meet the Candidates forum in conjunction with the NAACP at Bethel A.M.E. Church in an effort to provide an opportunity for citizens to meet the local candidates running for local offices city and county wide.

International Awareness and Involvement

International Day of Awareness

This event began in 2002 as a national initiative to educate individuals on HIV/AIDS awareness. It is in reference to Summit V: Health and Healing-Let It Continue, Promoting Health and Wellness on HIV/Aids. It is held the second Saturday in the month of March. The first year, 2002, TAC held a health awareness activity day at the Jack McLean Park with speakers, food, handouts, screenings, etc. In 2002 we teamed up with Shisa, Inc. and MAAC at Walker Ford Community Center with the theme concentrating on HIV Awareness for African Men and youth. In 2004 we teamed up with Shisa, Inc. and Big Bend Cares and held a brain bowl with area youth teams participating at Perry Paige auditorium on FAMU’s campus.

In 2005 and 2006 the Tallahassee Alumnae Chapter joined forces with the City of Tallahassee Parks and Recreation to expand this event to encourage whole participation from families. This event named "Community Play Day" has afforded the citizens of Tallahassee an opportunity to educate themselves about the health issues surrounding African American children and adults and the importance of exercise through good ole fashion fun in the sun.
